Panel #16. Theodore D. Judah, chief engineer and founder of the Central Pacific Railroad Company, obtained congressional funding for a rail crossing of the Sierra. Construction from Sacramento began on January 8, 1863 and ended on May 10, 1869 at Promontory Point, Utah with the driving of the last spike. Approximately 10,000 Chinese were hired as laborers. They worked under adverse conditions for low wages. The construction company was highly profitable for all investors. (text from a plaque on the wall)
